Latin America | Uruguay: more national road champions for the 2023 season

Another of the Latin American countries that held their national road championships over the last weekend was Uruguay.

The Celeste nation emulated Ecuador and kept its native spectators in suspense for the resolution of each of the races.

The cycling epicenter was Paysandú, a region located to the west of the neighboring country, a land bordering Argentina.

The schedule of races, organized and carried out by the Uruguayan Cycling Federation, took place between Saturday and Sunday.

On the first day, the individual time trial was run and, the following day, the peloton stage.


Individual Time Trial (CRI):
On the elite men’s side, the winner of the test was the young and talented Eric Antonio Fagundez (24). The man born in Vergara, Treinta y Tres Department, recent reinforcement of Burgos – BH of Spain (UCI Pro Tour) won the 29 KM time trial, in a final time of 33:58 seconds.

Fagundez, who was in our province in January, because he ran the Giro del Sol (2.2 – América Tour) and the Vuelta a San Juan – UCI Pro Series, won his second Uruguayan national title in time trial. It is because in the 2018 season he was also champion, but in the Under 23 division.

The CRI podium for elite men was completed by the following competitors: Agustín Federico Moreira, 27 seconds behind, silver medal winner; and Roderick Asconeguy, 56 seconds away, holder of the bronze medal.


Online stage:
The cycling festival in Uruguay culminated on Sunday with the peloton trials. For the elite category of men, the race ended with an absolute owner of the victory: Diego Leonel Rodríguez (27).

The Uruguayan now national champion, who ran the 2019 Vuelta a San Juan with his team, won the 168 km test. Fernando Méndez became runner-up and Juan Echeverría as third.
